In “Steinbild gelb II” (Stone Painting Yellow II), Wilhelm Scherübl draws on materials left over from his sculptural work, specifically stone chips that he collects, colours and subsequently incorporates into his works on canvas. At the same time, he also draws on impressions from nature and explores their constant transformation. As a sculptor, he is primarily interested in developing forms by adding and removing material. He arranges the stones he has collected and coloured on the canvas in a specific arrangement and leaves them to dry for a certain period of time. The processual, ritualistic dimension and the physical effort involved are essential to Scherübl's work. Gradually, a kind of painted, sometimes asymmetrical grid emerges, determined by the shape of the stones and the flow of the paint. The minimalist work is created using only a few materials, conjuring up a gentle order and rhythm that resembles nature. Art and nature unite in a rule-free realm, even though nature has its own inherent order in which no two stones are alike and no form is repeated. Despite this unpredictability, or perhaps because of it, Scherübl repeatedly uses nature and elements from his immediate surroundings as sources of inspiration for his artistic practice. He sees his pieces as reflections on nature. However, the artist can never entirely control the work – for nature has its own rules, which Wilhelm Scherübl takes into account and integrates harmoniously into his oeuvre.
