Eduard Angeli lives between Vienna and Venice;, for all their differences, these two cities serve as a source of inspiration for the artist’s work. Angeli transports viewers to settings that stand in contrast to contemporary phenomena such as mass tourism and the associated problems. It is the atmospheric dimension, a sense of tranquillity, the absence of people, and stillness that interest Angeli and are reflected in his art. His work can be understood as a process of paring-down to the essentials, revealing the invisible. Light, fog, dawn, dusk are possible points of reference for viewers. It is not simply about perceiving the image per se, but also the mood it evokes, melancholic, nostalgic, precisely executed on jute canvas with charcoal, chalk, oil or red chalk. There is a greater longing than ever for such places, for that yearning is linked to a desire for peace, authenticity, and something natural – a model diametrically opposed to many of today’s popular destinations such as Venice, which are struggling with overtourism, destruction of the natural environment, cultural alienation, and economic dependence.
