About

STRABAG ART champions young artists with lasting support, while making contemporary art accessible to all. With over 8,000 works on display around Europe, the STRABAG ART Collection is one of the most extensive private art holdings on the continent - made public for you to explore.
Mission Statement
STRABAG ART supports and showcases contemporary European art by collecting, exhibiting, and promoting emerging talents. Through its award, residency programme, and public exhibitions, it brings art into everyday life and fosters long-term dialogue between artists, audiences, and the world of work.
History

STRABAG ART started with a clear idea: to bring contemporary art into everyday working life. The idea stuck — and shaped everything that came next.
Driven by Hans Peter Haselsteiner and founding director Wilhelm Weiß, the collection quickly expanded from Carinthia to the rest of Austria, growing alongside the STRABAG Group. By 2002, over 1,000 works had been acquired.
In 1994, STRABAG launched its first art prize to support emerging Austrian artists — laying the foundation for today’s STRABAG ART Award.
The opening of STRABAG Haus in Vienna in 2004 marked a new chapter. The Kunstforum moved to the capital, bringing the collection with it. The top floor became the STRABAG Artlounge; the ground floor, home to the Gironcoli-Kristall - a permanent installation of nine large-scale sculptures by Bruno Gironcoli.
Since 2009, the STRABAG ART Award has grown into an international platform for young European talent. That same year, the Artist-in- Residence programme was established, offering working and living space for artists of the STRABAG ART Collection.
Today, the STRABAG ART team curates exhibitions, manages the collection, supports artists, and oversees every detail — from documentation to loans, curation to care. The mission remains unchanged: to strengthen contemporary art by supporting those who shape it.

In summer 2020, the STRABAG Artaward was presented for the 25th time! A comprehensive anniversary publication (DE/EN) has now been published by Ritter Verlag Klagenfurt. The STRABAG Art Forum is thus celebrating a quarter of a century of joy in discovering and learning about contemporary art production and unconditional and in many cases friendly support and promotion of young up-and-coming artists. All 138 award-winning artists to date are presented, and many award winners and former jury members have their say.
