ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alexandra Hennig, Curator, Kunsthalle Krems
Painting after painting: In the works of Svenja Deininger, the diverse problems and crises of art in the age of technical images are reflected and made productive as a creative impulse. Deininger questions materials, techniques and apodictic demands for objectivity and abstraction and wins aesthetic solutions from these conflict situations. Her aim is not to create a false artistic harmony, but to understand the dissonances that go hand in hand with contemporary painting as an integral part of her work. Svenja Deininger often uses different primers that create surface tension in the picture and influence the coloring - a modular approach in which the coloristic is used atmospherically to either create balance or create a counterweight. Despite its explicitly non-narrative character, Svenja Deininger's painting seems to open up mysterious pictorial spaces. Sometimes one thinks, as with Edward Hopper, that one is looking through a window at a landscape flooded with light, occasionally the viewer is confronted with the illusion of spatial depth due to the harsh contrasting of light and dark tones and the combination of geometric patterns. “I follow different painting styles in one picture that exist side by side. Some of them have not been completed, I destroy their results again until they suddenly connect again. ”
