“Abgrillen, eine Würstchenparty” (“Barbecue, a Sausage Party”) is one of the works by STRABAG ART Award winner Haakon Neubert. At first glance, the everyday familiarity in the paintings of the Berlin-based artist seems almost too obvious: a barbecue party like a thousand others. On closer inspection, it becomes clear that the composition depicts a centrally placed figure who, with the arms outstretched, forms a triangle above the barbecue. The protagonist is surrounded by individual characters eating sausages, shouting into an emergency telephone or ‘chilling’ boredly with clunky headphones. These figures form further triangles within the ingenious composition.
Neubert’s figural arrangement in a recurring pattern is reminiscent of the depiction of the Last Supper—a motif that has long been interpreted not only in religious terms but also as a symbol of community. The artist shows us that such communal rituals can take place anywhere in everyday life, even in an unassuming location as a crash barrier by the roadside, complete with the aforementioned bright red emergency telephone. Despite changes in clothing and appearance, social dynamics remain the same or similar.
In this and other works in the exhibition, Neubert moves confidently back and forth between art-historical pictorial traditions, consistently creating a distinct painterly universe.
