ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anne-Catharina Gebbers, Curator Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin
Jury member STRABAG ART Award
Gently billowing curtain fabrics, fragmentary interiors, window frames, plinths and remnants of antique sculptures, as well as lily ponds, are among the motifs in the work of Emma Hummerhielm Carlén. Wax, plaster and white paint, photographs washed out through countless photocopying processes, minimalist sculptural objects and interventions constitute the painterly means from which the sense of something absent emerges – semiotic in-between worlds that hover between visibility and withdrawal.
The sensuality and poetic quality of her motifs, materials and surfaces are embedded by Emma Hummerhielm Carlén within cool, precise spatial constellations that arise in dialogue with the architectural conditions of the presentation context. Depicted spaces and sculptural elements, objects and architecture, real and reproduced space interweave.
The STRABAG ART Site thus becomes a pictorial space in its own right, in which works and the existing architecture are interlaced within a compositional structure. Drawing on the architecture of the space and the permanently installed works by Bruno Gironcoli, Hummerhielm Carlén composes partition walls, sculptures and wax works into an overall image through an expanded painterly process.
