Emma Hummerhielm Carlén (1991, Stockholm/SE) studied at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, the Royal Institute of Arts in Stockholm, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The artist studied architecture before turning to sculpture, so reflection and reference to space is always an intrinsic part of her work. She also works with wax, an extremely fragile material. Its consistency has something fleeting and flexible about it; sometimes it is liquid, sometimes hard, but always fragile. She combines wax with photographs, which also have something temporary and momentary about them. She often chooses motifs that can be found between different levels of meaning: very general things that may seem banal in everyday life, such as curtains, doors, plants, which are familiar to everyone and at the same time are a kind of “non-motif.” However, she is always concerned with the combination of motif, materiality, and form of presentation. Emma Hummerhielm Carlén's works embody a genuine artistic language that uniquely combines several media. The artist received a STRABAG ART Award recognition prize in 2025.
