Who Is Robert Gabris? Why Inventing Human: Sketches? What Are Cyberlove, Insectology, Herbarium?
Sometimes we forget that art doesn’t need to be interpreted in order to allow its viewers to share the forms of the world created by different chains of genetic or cultural characteristics. Although we are living in a historically important era of identity politics and culture wars, let us briefly set aside this interpretational possibility and simply observe what the lines of life and traces of desire in Robert Gabris’ drawings do with the viewer’s imagination. They separate the various organs and parts of the human body from the whole (for instance, by using the scalpel of digital display functions as in Cyberlove) in order for them to fluidly become a part of new structures composed of the shoots of plants or the parts of insect bodies. Even human prosthetics will probably not resemble the dystopia of RoboCop but are more likely to take the path of the floral, fungal, or algal implants from Gabris’ posthuman herbarium.
Rōbertus Gabri sounds like it might be the name for a fruit fly from Mesopotamia, a member of the class Insecta, whose body is by necessity split up so that it may be attached to human fingers, hair, or genitalia and thus become artlessly human (Homo, humus – from the earth).
