Benjamin Burkard’s paintings unfold as complex spatial constructions, where figures and animals gradually surface from dense, abstract fields of colour. His background in biology subtly permeates these compositions, not only in their precise, almost anatomical attention to detail, but in the way his imagery operates like a living system. Each canvas becomes a visual narrative, interwoven with historical allusions, pixelated fragments, and blurred faces that often resist recognition.

Yet Burkard’s work reaches beyond personal or formal exploration. Echoes of literary scenes and references to the canon of twentieth-century art emerge throughout, only to be re-situated within surreal, meticulously rendered environments. The result is an ecological universe where nature and animal life entwine with uncanny precision, and architectural structures appear to dissolve into the organic. Within these layered worlds, the human figure is an ambiguous presence shifting between the role of constructor and that of an unwelcome intruder in a world that no longer accommodates certainty.

Burkard’s compositional logic resists closure. With carefully modulated colour palettes and spatial tensions, each work invites the viewer into a visual labyrinth full of entry points but devoid of final answers. What emerges is a quiet but insistent critique of a world in flux: over-designed, oversaturated, and on the edge of collapse. In this tension between beauty and entropy, Burkard’s paintings remain open, elusive, and profoundly resonant.
