Benjamin Burkard (1986, Kandel/DE) studied painting and biology at the University of Landau. Inspired by medieval gold ground painting, Burkard uses precisely this technique to build a bridge to the past in terms of content, linking it to a contemporary perspective and current values. Benjamin Burkard's paintings are complex both in their visual language and in terms of their technical execution: the canvas is coated several times before he applies a smooth base coat, which is then covered with gold, silver, or copper leaf. In the next step, he applies the paint to this high-quality base: first gesturally, colorfully, informally, and only then does he work out the figurative, painterly elements, scratching, etching, and destroying this figuration and landscape until he finds a balance between abstraction and figuration. In the process, art-historical references, pixels, and fiction merge into a pictorial motif. Benjamin Burkard received a STRABAG ART Award recognition prize in 2025.
