BERTAM HASENAUER / TOMORROW WIL BE DIFFERENT

The drawings by Bertram Hasenauer open spaces of seemingly unlimited expansion that arise when the portrayed and the viewer look. Oscillating between introspection and observation, his pictures subvert the boundaries of inside and outside. Imagination and perception overlap.
Dr. Benjamin Meyer-Krahmer

The portrait-like pictures by Betram Hasenauer form a typology of the contemporary. Each individual exists as an image of reality without being the realistic representation of an identifiable individual. Each is developed from different models and, through the intermediate medium of photography, draws on a wide variety of people and gestures. All of them combine features and characteristics of the most diverse people, the only thing they have in common is their youth and a certain androgyny. In his painted portraits, Hasenauer offers a finely differentiated view of the alleged nature of idealistic figures. They are representations of concentrated reality. Axel Lapp 2004

Lives and works in Berlin

In his works, Hasenauer deals, among other things, with the broad spectrum of non-verbal communication - gestures, poses, body postures - what can they say, how are they interpreted by the viewer? ...
The models are always presented alone, in a clear pose, in front of a neutral white background. Due to the elaborate way of implementation - the artist carefully applies the color like a thin film on a finely structured primer - the irritating surface is emphasized and placed in the foreground. The sitters seem waiting, they remain in their searching melancholy, past and future seem to coincide in these pictures - this floating state, skillfully constructed by Hasenauer, casts the viewer under its spell.
