FELIX MALNIG / GHOST TOWN

Felix Malnig shows in his pictures the social and cultural effects of architectural projects, urban planning and design in public spaces as they are typical for large international cities. Planned as symbols and monuments that stand for urban life, modernity and economic progress, the buildings and sculptures depicted by Malnig turn out to be anonymous shells and monuments of stagnation and desolation. Felix Malnig literally dissolves the pretense of dynamism, power and upswing through monuments in public urban space through the means of his painting. He works in mixed media with silver acrylic paint and colored spray paint on canvas. The silver color scheme can stand for stainless steel as well as for the threatening smog mass of the gray city reality or the shining shine of an architectural symbol that only shines on the surface.

Felix Malnig has embarked on a new technical path. In earlier works, the artist had used bubble wrap instead of the canvas. The photographs generated images formed a grid system on the circular air chambers, whereby the freely painterly was relativized in favor of the technically reproducible. A silvery surface now covers the picture carrier, which alternates between mattness and reflection. Malnig paints the architectural subjects in a schematic way on the ground. In the distance, colors and shapes flow into a homogeneous picture structure.
