BEFORE RUINS marks Dior Thiam’s first solo show, tracing her practice of interweaving memory, history, and image. Across painting, photography, poetry, and installation, Thiam interrogates and affirms the sanctity of the fragment—looking into the face as well as the place. In unlocking archives and softening the rectilinear frame, her work materializes within and makes the cracks and apertures between ruin and repair, presence and absence visible.

Acting to both, disrupt and care, Thiam cuts into the image to reveal scars of colonial history; with thread, she sutures into wholeness what has been extracted. This material dialectic asks: Who are we, before we are ruined or when we stand in front of ruin?

Implicit here is the conviction that the past (and the present) is never fully lost. As Achille Mbembe reminds us: "We will have to learn to remember together and, in so doing, to repair together the world's fabric and its visage." Thiam inhabits this vision in BEFORE RUINS, inviting the viewer into the tension between what is broken and what may still be mended, together.
