ABOUT THE EXPOSITION
Tayfun Belgin, director Osthaus Museum, Hagen and member of the jury

In Natascha Schmittens paintings we see sometimes dark colors, sometimes light strokes, lines and surfaces that relate to one another compositionally and in a way that amazes us viewers. In a certain area of the picture we see a kind of body fragment that demands our attention; However, if one wanted to pursue this further, a sometimes deep break follows, which dissolves a last remnant of figuration. Dynamically formulated line layers remain, which may release brightness or concentrate on a dark island of color. Our eyes are drawn from one - halfway figurative form - to another, more abstractly appearing image surface. The picture carrier, nylon, helps the artist to move playfully from picture to picture and to create imaginative structures with ink and oil paint. Their color spectrum ranges from light blue through green, yellow, pink and brown to a matt and dense gray. And really: the colors shine from within. This imagery is different from everyday life. These tightly woven images challenge our vision.
