ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Mag.a Barbara Rüdiger, curator
In Verena Dengler's work, painting is always one medium alongside others, embedded in intricate narrative installations in which different narrative threads can be found in spatial situations. The exhibition in the STRABAG Artlounge now shows an overview of the various ways in which the artist has approached this “supreme discipline” and has questioned its position within art history so far. Many of the works can be seen for the first time in Austria. The STRABAG Artaward International was able to fulfill the artist's long-cherished wish: a trip to Spitzbergen in summer 2018. The topicality of climate change and the energy transition is particularly noticeable there; disused coal mines stand like ruins in the rough landscape and the dramatic melting of glaciers changes nature and brings dangers such as landslides with it. Her impressions of the polar summer are recorded in sketches and watercolors, including on a new type of synthetic paper that allows the colors to dry on the surface.
