ABOUT THE ARTIST
Elsy Lahner, Curator ALBERTINA Wien

Andreas Werner is an artist who works primarily in the medium of drawing. He skillfully understands how to use the variety of expressive possibilities offered by the medium and to transfer them into new structures of meaning. Since 2017, the artist has been working on a series of large-scale drawings with enigmatic configurations that oscillate between architecture and sculpture, rocket and robot, and are carried by the mood of dystopian fictions. The technoid-looking monuments seem both alien and familiar, could derive from a distant future as well as from an archaic past. Recently, Werner has expanded these peculiar structures with a subtle colorfulness that seems borrowed from the silent films of the 1920s and 1930s.
Beside the large format, Werner uses small and sometimes very old papers for experimenting new techniques and procedures. The resulting representations range from romantic landscapes and naturalistic images, rock formations and scientific depictions, to abstract structures and architectural utopias, to post-media aesthetics and digital disruptors. In self-built showcases, he spreads out this diversity of drawing possibilities and, by combining the different works, unwinds dialogues that subtly expand his large-format individual drawings and embed them in multi-layered narratives.
