Stylianos Schicho (Vienna 1977) studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Wolfgang Herzig. In 2017, the artist was awarded a STRABAG Artaward International recognition prize. Schicho's work revolves around "being watched," the omnipresent control of our surveillance society and through social networks. Oversized eyes stare out of his canvases, the viewers become the observed under the piercing gaze. The transparent-looking figures, whose contours are loosely drawn with charcoal, are reminiscent of a comic-like visual language. The works create a tension between subject and viewer that is almost oppressive.
